SPANISH NEWSPAPER BRILLIANT ARTICLE (Google translation follows)
One of the most encouraging news in 2014 is the opening of negotiations with the Iranian regime over its nuclear program. Rightly, the international community is concerned about the proliferation of these weapons , hence , exceptionally, on the other side of the table we are acting together to the U.S. , Russia , China and the European Union. But despite the incredible destructive power of these weapons, some argue that there are so exceptional , they are , say , around many tons of explosives together. Some reason do not lack : the biggest genocide in history, committed against the Jewish people , did not require nuclear weapons, as they were not needed more than a few tens of thousands of Chinese-made machetes to finish with 800,000 Tutsis died in the Rwandan genocide. The approximately 135,000 victims of Hiroshima defy our understanding , but so do the nearly 300,000 deaths in the battle for Verdun. The stark reality is that since the dawn of time , man has shown an amazing ability to kill , and do it in mass and steadily, and it has used everything at their disposal : a machete , AK -47 , conventional explosives or bombs.
The greatest genocides in history have not required missile
One moment , ” human being? ” . Not exactly . The whole practice of all these deaths have in common as relevant as unseen indeed in the public debate: who were the men who committed them . Military history leaves no doubt : the armies have been formed by men, who have been executing almost exclusively of this type of violence, and its main victims. Certainly guerrillas and terrorist groups have historically included women, sometimes very bloody ( in Spain , unfortunately , we know the phenomenon ), but the military violence by women has been a drop in the ocean. The result is not known , it is less tragic : only in the twentieth century , triggered the victims of these conflicts and executed by men living between 136 and 148 million people were killed .
We can ban the bombs, but always behind there is a man
They say that wars are things of the past , typical of pre-democratic societies. But how then to explain the gender bias that dominates the violence in our societies ? Not talking about atavistic societies but of Western societies , where full democracies , and the United States , statistics show that 90 % of all homicides committed between 1980 and 2005 were for males, while only 10% of women . Of those homicides , more than two thirds (68 % ) were committed by men against men , while one in five (21 % ) killed a man woman. Although they were women who killed men , only accounted for 10 % of all homicides , while , significantly , the percentage of women killed was ridiculous women ( 2.2%). So women do not kill women, only men and to a large extent in self-defense. Clear that the U.S. is more violent than other society , but data from Spain , UK and other countries around us are not very different : tellingly , the Spanish prison population is composed of 90 % men and 10 % women. Like war , murder and general crime seem almost purely male phenomenon.
Rape is the most shameful chapter of armed conflicts
The effects of a patriarchal culture dominated by men is so devastating that it seems that in the world is (invisible , but war ) war of men against women is fought. According to the UN , 70% of women have experienced some form of violence throughout his life, one in five sexually oriented . Incredibly , women between 15 and 44 are more likely to be assaulted by a partner or sexually assaulted than from cancer or have an accident. In Spain and other neighboring countries , almost half of the women were the victims of homicide at the hands of their partners, compared with 7 % of men, which means that the probability of a woman killed by her partner is six times higher than that of a man.
Sexual violence against women is pervasive and is one of the most shameful chapters, and more muted , the history of warfare. This despite evidence that such violence was not only spoiled but encouraged as a weapon of war. According to Keith Lowe , author of Wild Continent , World War II broke all records of sexual violence, especially against German women as the Soviet army was entering Germany ( an estimated two million were violated as a result of a policy sexual revenge deliberate ) . Today, the UN estimates 200,000 violations that occurred in the Republic of Congo, a similar figure offered for Rwanda . Far from Africa, in the heart of Europe educated , rape was also a weapon of war in the ethnic conflict in the former Yugoslavia , where an estimated 20,000 to 50,000 women were raped . To which a long list of crimes that only gender differences be explained and includes selective abortion of girls , honor killings , trafficking in women for sexual exploitation or sexual mutilation, which affects added to 130 million women. No need to delve into the subtleties of political, economic and social discrimination , itself a very telling fact widespread subordination of women : the level of physical violence against women in the world that says it all. Some describe the violence perpetrated against women just because of being as ” feminofobia ” . Why did not sound this term , or something similar ?
90 % of the prison population is male Spanish
Let’s face it : men are the biggest weapon of mass destruction that has been the history of mankind , and there are about 3,500 million of them out there loose . We can ban guns , handguns , landmines , bombs or phosphorus fragmentation , bacteriological , chemical and nuclear weapons, but at the end we’ll always be in the same place : behind each weapon will be a male . Hence UN has adopted several global initiatives , drawing on the Security Council itself , which became visible in its resolution 1325 of 31 October 2000 for the first time the need for an explicit and differentiated protection for women and girls in conflict , and the vital contribution that women do and should do in terms of conflict resolution and peacebuilding .
There are many possible , and complex explanations for these facts. Nor are easy answers we should give, and much less action to take . But the facts are there, and are undeniable : men kill and kill a lot and put a lot of violence against women. However, the public debate on this fact is nonexistent. Rather than answers , this debate requires questions, actually a single question: are men WMD ?
